Gary says “This is still one of my favourite drawings, 15 years after birth. That was why I chose it for the cover of my 1994 charity exhibition. For me, it was one of those drawings that I got totally immersed in; that drew itself. That’s not the reason why I like it though.

DETAIL

“I love the simple composition, the swirly patterned detail, the baby’s eyes, the velvety mouth, the shape of the trunk. It is one of only very few drawings of mine that I can list so many positive points. That’s not to say I don’t like my other drawings. I do, but I can’t help but see faults in them and I think that makes me try harder next time.  

“Someone else who likes this drawing is TV presenter and wine connoisseur, Jilly Goolden. She bought it from the ’94 exhibition as she said it made her heart sing. She has since been quoted in a number of magazines as saying it is her favourite Worldly possession. Wow!”
