Gary says “In 1991, after a long campaign, The Born Free Foundation successfully released the last three dolphins ever held captive in British dolphinariums back into the wild. Their new home was the open, turquoise seas around the Turks and Caicos Islands set in the Caribbean.

"I drew Freedom in response to the momentous occasion, as how I imagined the three Bottlenose Dolphins were feeling after their release, finally free to roam the ocean, In my opinion, the frothy white patterns of the water and the two shimmering shapes beneath the sea, help set the scene just as much as the surfacing dolphin.

“Freedom was also used in Virginia McKenna’s 1992 book “Into the Blue” along with another of my dolphin drawings”. The book was a celebration of dolphins, through her poems and essays and also paintings, drawings and photographs by many artists “Into the Blue” was created in aid of the Born Free Foundation.”
