Gary says “The rough sketch for this drawing was
actually done way back in 1992. Although I liked it as a clean appealing
composition, I didn’t have enough good reference material to move forward with
the drawing and flesh it out. Finally, in November 2007, I was able to observe
at close range many young Giraffes in both Arusha and Tarangire National Parks
in Tanzania.
“I’m
glad I waited. The finishing touches like the swish of the tail, the cheeky
horns, the shy, seahorse-like head and the velvety splayed out legs wouldn’t
have been quite the same in the 1992 version. It’s often the little extra
touches that can make a piece of art stand out.”
