Gary says: “Majesty came, not as usual, from a scene I had witnessed, but from a concept I saw in my mind. I envisioned a group of four different cat heads grouped together on a wall to create an eye-catching design that I hoped would have a real impact and focal point in a room. I wanted each cat composition to be very simple and to just focus on their beautiful faces and distinctly unique markings and their captivating eyes making direct contact with you.

“Although I have been lucky enough to see and hear wild tiger in Nepal, unlike the huge majority of my drawings I didn’t use my own photographs for reference. Because it was such a simple design, I chose eight similar Tiger photos from wildlife books and picked out the best parts in each one. I then added my own ‘flavour’ that in the end made my drawing quite unlike any one of these photos.

“Apart from wanting all my drawings to feel ‘honest’ I also strive for a ‘flow’ in tone, movement and pattern. Sometimes the technical side of drawing can be at odds with this desire. I am very happy with the end results of Majesty: it ticked just about all the boxes for me.

“I have already started on my next drawing for this series, of a Cheetah, with I think a Jaguar and a Snow Leopard to complete the set later on. All four could be placed side by side on a wall or alternatively two hung underneath the other pair. Either way I think they would look pretty dynamic. Or course they could always be bought and hung singly. Each print will be an identical size.

“I’m sure we will be hanging a set of the box canvas cats in our home. I know just the space for them!”

Gary's portrait of the cheetah, Grace,  is now finished and can be seen on the previous page.
