Gary says “I saw, photographed and drew the Owl
Butterfly during my second memorable trip to Venezuela in 1993. I chose it as a
subject because of the beautiful patterns and striking “Owl eye” on the wing. I
thought it would make a great design.
“I
personally would put the Owl Butterfly in the top half of my preferred prints
out of the 120 published. I chose it for the inside front cover of the
catalogue for my last major exhibition and in fact, it was one of the first
originals sold at that show.
"Around
the time when nearly all my prints were selling out soon after, or even before publication,
Owl Butterfly was the exception. It finally sold out in 2001 after a constant
trickle of sales over seven years. So I suppose that means it’s the least
popular print with my collectors.”
