In 1993 Gary travelled to
the Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre in
Portugal to spend some time with rescued wolves for a drawing.
The Centre is set in 17 hectares of wild forested terrain providing a
safe haven for wolves. Many are rescued from traps or discarded as pets. The
long-term aim is to build a breeding nucleus for reintroduction to the wild.
Gary recalls the visit “I
spent an unforgettable time at the Centre,
observing, photographing and generally having fun with the wolves.” He was privileged
to be able to enter the huge enclosure and mix with the wolves on a number of
occasions. On his first encounter he was advised to let the wolves lick, and
then nibble his fingers to gain their trust.

His drawing Iberian
Wolves – hope for the future, was released as a limited edition in 1994 and
helped raise money through the Born Free
Foundation for the Centre.
“My aim was to create a
drawing that portrayed the very different characteristics of the wolves and, by
having them grouped closely together, convey a feeling of the harmony that
exists within the wolf pack. I knew I wanted the alpha male Sandalo’s
commanding presence in my picture, so I chose to draw him looking straight at
you!”
Since his visit a number
of pups have been born – hope for the future.
