Gary says “Although it was unconscious, my style of
drawing the fur detail was quite different with Pride and Joy, (although there
were touches of it starting in Supreme). I became totally immersed in the neck
and belly fur, and it just seemed to come out in swirls and ringlets! Lets call
it my Art Nouveau period!
“In
hindsight, I can see that it wasn’t quite in keeping with my other prints, not
quite so realistic. But I am still very fond of Pride and Joy. Lots of things
came together with the drawing. I love the feeling of power and the intense
gaze. I enjoy the sweep of the stripes going from the parent’s face to the
cubs, and the cheekiness in the baby’s eye. I think overall, it’s quite a
dynamic drawing.”
